In Evaru, I chose to use a stark, desaturated palette and high contrast to heighten the psychological tension and underscore the moral ambiguity that runs through the film. The usage of lenses for each character is different at different stages of the story and it subconsciously helped to pull the audience into the characters’ emotional turmoil, making them feel the same sense of confinement and unease. I kept the lighting sparse and directional, using it to illuminate only what was essential and let the rest slip into shadow—much like the story itself, which constantly hides more than it reveals. I made sure that the camera movement was deliberate and measured with calculated pace at which the truth is peeled back in a closed, intense space.
